RACING IN VICTORIA.
V.A.T.C. SPRING MEETING.
ECIJPSE STAKES WON BY. ANNA
CABLOVNA:
Melbourne, Oct. 14.
The meeting of the Victorian Amateur
Turf Club was continued at .Caulfeld to
day. -There was ra.in ea.rly in the day, but
there was an excellent attendanoe. The
Governor was among those present. The
track was in splendid order, and the racing.
throughout interesting. Two Caulfield Cup
candidates in Anna Carlovna and Sylvan.
more were successful.
Racing was resumed with the Emo
Hurdles. which brought out nine runners.
It was some time before a favourite was
found, but from 6 to 1 the top weight, Clon
taft, was backed down to'. 5 to 4. He was
always in a good position, and, taking com
mand at the last hurdle, won nicely by
I three-quarters of a length from Lasso, while
Mountain Heather, who was responsible for
most of the racing, was third.\ This was
Clontaft's first run since his V.R.C. Grand
NItional victory. His class was much
above the opposition, to-day.
There was a field of 21 for the Mona Nur
sery, the first handicap of the season for
two-year-olds tin Victoria. Celosia, the
Debutante Stakes winner, was amongst the
starters, and was thought to be well han
dicapped at 8.5. She opened favourite, and
remained in that position to the finish. She
went out at 3 to 1, the best backed of the
others being Nicanor and Bob' Sprightly.
Wolcen led for a time, but at the turn
Celosia was up with. the leaders, and she
led into the straight. Nicanor drew on
her at the dista'y:e and looked liked paws
min her, but he stopped in a couple of
strides., and, Celosia, going on, won easily
by two lengths and a half. Colonel Light
finished third just in front of Air Malt.
Celosia had won the two races in which she
had started, and that she is a very fast
mare goes without saying. In the De
butante Stakes she just struggled home at
the end of the half-mile, but she easily
lasted half a furlong further today, and
put up good time. Celosia is in the Mari
bvrnong Plate. for which her Debutante
&Stakes victory involved her in 101b. pen.
alty.
There were half a dozen runners in the
Eclipse Stakes, and Anna Carlovns Was
always an odds-on favourite. Newberry
was resporsible for the pace, but below the
distance Anna Carlovna took the lead, and
retained it to the finish. She'won nicely,
but by no means easily. Rathlea finished
well and got within a neck of her, while
Newberry was only a head away, and St.
Carwyne was close up. Anna Carlovna won
this event last year, apd afterwards ran
second to Aurifer in the Caulfield Cup. The
pair will have an opportunity of fighting it
out again next Saturday.
Grand Charm the favourite for the Aus
tralian Co:inthian. would, with ordinary
luck, have been returned the winner, and
was half-turned around when the barrier
rose. He lost several lengths, but, gradu
ally making up his ground, was lying second
at the distance. He, however, failed
to overhaul the rank outsider, Winnipeg,
who won by a length.
There was a field of a dozen for the
Coongy Handicap. Sylvanmore was always
favourite. After being laid at 4 to 1, he
firmed to 9 to 4. the next in demand being
Gladwyn, Meritus. Greek Fire, and Aris
taeus. Multravers and then Eubulus
made the running, and the latter lasted
until past the half-dst?nce when Sylvan
more, who was interfered with more than
once, came through, and won by half a
length. Remuneration was third, and Glad
wyn the nearest of the otheesr The win
ner is engaged in the Caulfield Cup at 8.4,
which includes a 31b. penalty for winning
the Braybrook Handicap at the V.R.C.
Winter meeting. Meritus ran badly, and
is evidently not hlmself.
The day's racing concluded with the
Moonga Handicap, run over five and a half
furlongs. 'There were-15 starters, and Gold
Brew went out favourite, with Wyadra
and Amata neat in demand. Gold Brew
got away hualy, bat, secing a lucky run
next the rails in the straight, got up in
time to het Yaren by half head, while
Amata beat the'others. The winner car
ried 9.13, and his time, lmia. 7see., is
equal to the Anatralian record for the dis
tanse.

RACING IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
A SERIOUS SMASH.
Sydney, Oct. 14.
There was a nasty smash at the Kensing
ton Pony Racing Club Spring meeting to
day. A field of 17 started in the First Divil
soen of the. Spring Cup. When the field
had settled down North Star crossed Yar
fum, who fell, and Fishguard, Mere's Pride,
Dormer, and Lady Blue toppled over him.
Yarrum's back was broken and Fishguard
had a leg broken. All the riders who came
down were badly shaken and bruised. T.
McGrath,. the well-known Victorian horse
man, had his collar-bone broken. The
stewards held an inquiry into the accident
immediately after the race. They disquali
fled the rider of North Star, J. Gaynor,
for life, and awarded the race to Cable
News, althou?h North Star had finished
first.
ITEMS OF NTrEREST.
Melbourne, Oct. 14,
Owing to Aleconner's ungenerous running
with him in the Caulfield Stakes, K. H.
Bracken, who was retained to ride the
-horse in the Caulfield Cup; has suggested
that Aleeouna might run better if midden
by L Fisher. who was successful on him
in the Memsie and October Stakes. The
owners, while having every, confidence in
Bracken, 'have agreed to his request, and
L. Fisher will ride Aleconner in the Caul
field Cup. Bracken will continue tb ride
the other horses of.' the Messrs. Bailleu
during the meeting.
Anna Carlovna to-day repeated her per
formance of last year by winning the
Eclipse Stakes. The time was much bet
ter than 12 months ago, when the weather
was inclement. Opinions differ amongst
racing men as to whether the win today
was an easy one. Killorn certainly rode
confidently, but it is doubtful if the mare
could have gone much faster. Rathlea,
who was interfered with at the side,, fin
ished well and got at the finish within a
neck of Anna Carlovna, while Newberry.
who at an early stage of the race had
a dozen lengths' lead, was only a head
away third. St. Carwyne, who was blocked
while making his run in the straight,
could not have been more than a head
away fourth. Aurifer did not: quite run
up to expectations, and neither did Sir
Aiwynton. This is how the weights com
pare in this event and the Caulfield Cup:
Anna Carlovna (first), Eclipse Stakes 9.4,
Caulfield esp 8.3; Rathlea (second), 9.4,
8.8, inc. 716b. pen.; St. Carwyne (fourth),
9.1. 71; Aurifer (fifth), 9.4, 8.9; Sir Alwyn
ton (last), 9.1, 8.9
Anna Carlovna will be greatly benefited
in the Caulfield Cop by having 151b. off
her back, but it is not certain that she
will again beat St. Carwyne, who will
have 271b. off. This was St. Carwyne's
first run. on a left-handed course. iBe is
a very nice colt and must run a great
race next Saturday. I
Five Caulfield Cup candidates ran in the
Coongy Handicap, and Sylvanmoro put up
a fine performance by winning after get
ting a .bad run. The distance was the
same as the Eclipse Stakes, but the time'
was not so fast as that registered by
Anna Carlovna, Sylvanmore was inter
fered !with in the early part of the race
and again about four and a half furlongs
from home. He seemed in such hopeless
trouble at the latter point that odds of
10 to 1 were offered against bin,. He is
a big horse with a fine stride, and when
he got clear in the straight he rapidly
-overhauled the leaders and eventually won
by half a length from the outsider Eubu
lus. With his handy weight Sylvanmore
can be depended upon to run a good race
in the Caumfield Cup. Comparative weights
are appended:-Sylranmore (firat Coongy
Hasidicap, 9.1), Cauifield Cup 8.4, inc. 3m.
pen.; Eubulus (second), 8.3, 7.11; Gladwyn
(fourth), 7.11, 6.13; Meritus (eighth), 7.9,
'1.3; Greek Fire (tenth), 8.1, 7.7.
The record time for ne suie and three
furlongs at Caulfield is 2min. 20lsec., put
up by 'Alaw in the Eclipse Stakes in
1908. Anna Carlovna took 2min. 22sec.
to-day, but it was all the game a good
go. Comparative 'times are as follow:
iiclipse Stakes: First three furlonges,1913,
41sec.,; 1914 39sec.; neat half-mile, 511sec.','
3sec.; last half-mile,: iisec., QJseo:; last
six furlongs, 1min: lfsec., !un. 17?ee.;
full time, 2min. 251ec., 2min. 22?sec.
Coongy Handicap: First three furlongs,
43sec., 4lsec.; next half-mile, 52sec., b21
see.; last half-mile, 52sec., 51sec.; last sil
furlongs, 1min. .17Jsec., mnin.' 16seec.; full
time, 2min. 27see., 2min.' 24sec. .
After the racing at Caulfiel' to-day
Anna Carlovna continued 'to be the .Caul
field Cup candidate whose chance is most
freely discussed. St. Carwyne is also
freely spoken of, others mentioned being
Uncle Sam, Aurifer,. Garkn, and Sylvan
more.
W. Smat will'ride Eubulus in the Caul
field Cup.
UNREGISTERED RACING.
PREMANTLE OLUB'S MEETING.
The enclosures at the Bictbn Racecourse
yesterday 'afternoon were comfortably
filled, when the Fremantle Rake Club con
ducted their usual fortnightly meeting, .in
bright, warm' weather. Recent form was
well maintained, and backers held 'theii~
own. The racing was keen, and there were
70 starters in the half-dozen events. The
principal race was won by Nardoo from
Minnacoil and The Pearler. Three of the
events were won by.local-bred horses. The
trotting race produced a large field, and
inquiries were held..by the stewards into
the performance registered by Ginger and
Dixie Lass. In the former case the ex
planation tendered was considered satis
factory, whilst the. owner of Dixie Lass
was ordered .to drive. the mare in' any
future events. The meeting was well con
ducted, and the river trip to and from
