SPORTING
THE TURF
It Is likely that at least one provin
cial racing club In New South Wales
will take action In the hear future to
prevent racing Information belne dis-
seminated by persons on the course for
tho guidance of metropolitan sports
men, particularly those people in the
habit of participating in starting-price
betting (says the ."Sydney Morning
Herald.") Telegraph offices on all the
A.R.C. courses and a majority of the
metropolitan, courses have boon closed
for several years. The Kembla Grange
Club officials discussed the question of
similar action during the meeting on
that course last week. .
In deoiding to. stand . tho imported
sire Melforty which ho- purchased for
8700 guineas at the dispersal sale of
the Macqunric Stud, at lOO'gulncas,
Mr. H.;S. Thompson states that ho
has given a great deal ol thought to
the subject. Melfort Is tho highest
priced stallion standing at the stud In
New South Wales, and since his im
portation his services havo been
greatly sought. His . previous . owner,
Mr. H. Al Taylor, reserved Mclfort's
services to his own stud, for Ills first
two seasons, and Mr. Thompson stated
that since ho had secured tho horse,
he had received many applications for
matlngs. Ho could, lie said, provide
Melfort with a full list from his own
establishment, but lie realised that
there were also many lilgh-class marcs
in other ownership, and if Melfort was
to have his full opportunities, consi
deration would have to bo given to
that nspcct of. the matlngs. To at
tract the best of the outside mare3,
the matter of a foe entered largely
Into tho discussions, nnd ultimately
Mr, Thompson decided that ho would
fix the fee at 109 guineas, at the some
time restricting tho number of outsido
mores, which ho will approvo.
The blood stallion Staldon Is on
board tho Manoora, consigned to Mr.
E. E. Dl White, of Toomba (N.Q.), but
the horse Is to go to Mr. H. Clarke of
Fanning River; Stalden is by Valais,
from that good mare Scarlet, which won
tho Sydney Cup in 1924.' Scarlet was
by tho beautifully bred Bright Steel
from Red Ink, by Playbill from Bluo
Blade, by Truo Blue from Hester, by
Beauchamp from Ettle, by John Bull
from Cobweb, by Fireworks from The
Fly (a slstor to Angler, and half sister
to Rose of Denmark) by Fisherman
from Marchioness, one of the few
classic winners to come to Australia.
Marchioness won the Oaks, and her
half brother Tho Marquis, which also
came to Australia, won the Two Thou
sand Guineas and St. Leger, and the
Champion Stakes. Scarlet won the
Sydney Cup, the VR.C. Oaks, and
Sires' Produce Slakes, and the Rydal-
mere Mile at Rosehill. Stalden won a
Two-Year-old. Handicap " at Caulfiold,
boating Hall Mark, and was placed
third In the V.R.C. Sires' Produce
Stakes and second on two occasions as
a two-year-old. Stalden Is a bay,
foaled In 1925. Ho has sired winners in
Victoria, and Is said to be a fine look
ing horse. He certainly should' be an
acquisition to the North. Stalden was
bred by ,. Mr.. J. I. Whiter-Irving, of
Yandra, Nagamblle, Victoria.
