ZANE GREY'S CATCH
GIANT SWORDFISH
Off Montague Island
LARGEST OF THE SEASON
SYDNEY, Thursday. — Mr. Zane
Grey was smiling happily when the
launch Avalon returned to Bermagui
ythis evening, after an expedition to the
big game fishing grounds off Montague
Island.
Residents of the town had observed
the ensign flying from the bow of the
launch, indicating a catch, and there
was quite a crowd at the jetty to see
the size of the swordfish which Mr.
Grey had landed. They were not disap
pointed, for it was the biggest caught
off the south coast this season. The
eager throng watched the scales as the
fish was weighed, and there was a
cheer when the scales indicated that it
was 2701b. The previous best this sea
son was that caught by Dr. G. M.
Faithfull, from Narooma, weighing
2501b.
Mr. Grey was cruising about 11 miles
off the coast, and seven miles south
of Montague Island, when he hooked
the swordfish. It was attracted to the
surface by "teasers" (brightly coloured
spinners) trailed behind the launch,
and seized" the kingfish bait, which
was trailing about five yards behind
the "teasers." Mr. Grey payed out
about 500 yards of line, and after a
short struggle hauled the fish to the
deck of the launch, where it was se
cured. The whole operation took only
half an hour.
Soon afterwards Mr. Grey- landed a
mako shark weighing about 1801b. Sev
eral other strikes were obtained, but
the bait was not taken.
