HEAVY FIGHTING.
CIVIL WAR IN MEXICO.
A TEN HOUR BATTLE.
Ends in Favor of Rebels.
NEW YORK. Wednesday.
The first .bloodshed' in the Mexican
revolution was reported to-day in five
States, as Government and revolu
tionists settled what appears to be a
life; and- death struggle, j /
The revolutionists claim the cap-,
turc of Monterey, a strategic railway
munition centre' in the State of Neu-
vqleon, with severe casualties, and the
capture of three Federal General's.
Local troops have claimed a vic
tory in. the State of Vera Cruz, Stans
at Coahuila, arid Sonora at Sinaloa,
are reported to «be" fighting.
The Government fnas made wide
plans of action on two fronts; north
and south.
Calles will conduct the campaign at
Sonora, and General Andrew Almazon
will concentrate on the south. '8,000
of his troops are marching on Vera
Cruz.
Opposing these leaders will be
General Gonzalo Escobar, commander
in chief of the insurgent forces.
RELIGION CROPS- UP.
For the first- time the religious
question has- appeared ,with the pro
mulgation of the manifesto to Fausto
Topete at Sonora,- proclaiming religi
ous freedom.- Preparation' has been
made to re-open the Catholic cathe-v
drals of Sonora,. closed since _192G.
Heavy troop movements are reported
from Mexico City where there is' per
fect order; The United States Ambas
sador, Mr. Morrow, made it plain he
would continue to deal only with the
recognised Government; «
CONFLICTING REPORTS.
The Commander of ! the Federal
troops, Matamores, has. denied that
Monterey has been captured. He said
the - battle started yesterday , and1 is
continuing.

NEW YORK, Wednesday.
Further reports indicate that the
rebels have positively captured Mon
terey, after a . ten hour battle? where
in one Federalist General was killed,
and three General's, 78 officers and
5:0 men were captured.
The Moican Navy is supporting
the rebels. Calles is massing the
loyal troops, as the revolt spreads,
with Mexico iCity asrthe next objec
tive.
The ..American Ambassador, Mr.
Morrow, is keeping a close observa
tion, without making any move at
present.
