Japs. Using Barges to
Move Supplies
SOMEWHERE IN NEW GUI
NEA. Wednesday—On the north
eastern coast of New Guinea, thei
Japanese are attempting to use
barges to transport supplies to
their beleaguered garrisons at
Lae and Salamaua.
It is the. same system they used
with success in the Philippines
mid Java but hi this campaign
Ihcy are harassed by strong
Allied air forces. In bringlng'sup
ply ships from Rabaul and Kav
idng to Wewak, their most • im
portant basa on the north-east
coast, the Japanese are taking a
circuitous route by wav of Ad
miralty Islands. The battle of the
Bismarck Sea taught them a bit
ter lesson and their object in
keeping as far away from the
coastline as possible is to dodge
if possible our land-based air
■Wewak is being constantly at
tacked by heavy bombers and
several ships have been sunk in
the harbour, but the Japanese
are obviously keen to retain their
grip on Lae and Salamaua.
Although land warfare is sta
tic at the moment, both sides are
jockeying for positions. Perhaps
the Japanese hold more cards
than the Allied fortes, but opin
ion'here is we can play ours bet
ter. One advantage which the
Japanese appear to possess is
ability to switch their air strength
from one base to another of
their many bases. - - —
