SUICIDE IN
VIEW OF 70
NEW YORK, September
30.—A handsome, unemploy
ed actor, Lewis Howard,
32, was in a serious con
dition today after, trying to
kill himself at a . Broadway
shooting gallery last night
while tiring at .ducks and
clay pigeons. ,
Ralph Mazza, assistant man
ager of the gullery, snjd that
Howard shot himself as nearly
70 patrons watched in horror.
"He lay on the floor bleed
ing and he begged me to finish
him off,'’ Mazza said.
Mazza said that Howard,
dressed “like a millionaire,
hit every target in' the arcade.
Then he' stood quietly as
though he were trying to de
cide what to shoot at next.
Howard adjusted the knot in
his tie, glanced at the crowd,
threw two white envelopes in
the air and .then put the
muzzle of the rifle under Ins
chin and fired.
Howard was taken to hos
pital where doctors found the
bullet had passed through his
jaw and lodged in his skull.
