STATUE OF 2,000 YEARS AGO.
A large bronze statue about Cft. in
height, believed to represent Apollo,
has been excavated in the Via dell'
Abbondanza (the. Street of Abun-
dance) in Pompeii, the ancient city
which was destroyed by an eruption
of Vesuvius in a.d. 79./ The statue is
in a good state of 'preservation and
is stated to be of great value. It was
in the Street of Abundance four years
ago that several notes on ivory tab-
lots from patrician girls to success
ful gladiators were found. A trans
lation of one of these love letters of
2,000 years ago reads : Art thou
Phoebus Apollo in the body of Her
cules ? Indeed thou urt a god to me.
