Bread Strike Now
Unlikely
BRISBANE. Wednesday.—The
threat ol a State-wide bread
strike is almost certain to be re
moved with the announcement
soon ot price adjustments in sev
eral country towns.
Op to Tuesday, the Queensland
Bread Manufacturers' Association
had been officially Informed oi
four increases out of 43 outstand
ing applicants. It is understood,
however, that increases now have
been granted in respect of many
of these claims.
Whether the increases will be
in the form of Government sub
sidies or higher retail price is not
yet known.
Indications to-day were that
chances of settlement were more
hopeful than at any stage of the
trouble. ...
The secretary, of the association
(Mr. K. Shaw) announced to-dav
that three Mt. Morgan bakers who
decided to close down on Monday
would now carry on. They had
withdrawn dismissal notices given
to their employees. |
This action had been taken fol
lowing advice from the Minister|
-for Labour (Mr. V. C. Gair) that,
officers cf his department would
investigate the position at Mount
Morgan where bakers had claimed |
they were unable to purchase
equipment for delivery services. ■
