DOMINATE VIC.
WINTER SWIMS
I New South Wales juniors dominated the Victorian
I winter swimming championships during the past week,
winning 13 events in the first two carnivals.
The N.S.W. wins clinch-
ed the big winter training
programme they have been
undergoing under, the
guidance of State coach
Frank Guthrie. '
Boys in the squad have
been training at Tatter-
sail's warmed pool, while
the girls have been prac-
. tising in the .freezing
waters at Cabarita baths
each Sunday morning.
Backstroke star Mal
colm Swanson made a
new Victorian junior re
cord with 1 min. 5 see-
to win the under 16 100
yards title.
Swanson and. Henricks
train under; the scientific
group — Harry Gallagher,
Forbes Carlile and Profes
sor Frank Cotton — at
Drammoyne baths.
Gary Chapman and
Lorraine Grapp also did
fast times and showed
they should clinch places
in the. Australian team
for the Empire Games.
Chapman won the men's
200. yards in 2 min: 3.2 sec.,
beating Kogarah Interme
diate School teammate Ron
McKInnon, and then won
the 400 yards in 4 min. 31.4
sec.
Two titles
Miss Crapp, .one. "of our
greatest prospects for some
years, won two events..
She gained the 100 yards
title in 1 min. 6.9 sec., and
the 200 yards in 2 min. 32.4
sec.
In the 200 yards event
another Sydney girl, Jan
Coghlan, was third.
Last season Lorraine
Crapp broke Australian
junior records in all sprint
events.
But in the open sprints
she went down to Marjory
McQuade in . the 110 and
220, and Judy Joy Davies
in the 440.
Butterfly win
Astrid Ainsworth, a team
mate of Miss Crapp, won
the open 100 yards butter
fly title in 28.6 sec.
Miss Ainsworth, who is
just over five feet taO,
made several new junior
breaststroke records last
season.
Pam Thicknesse, daugh
ter of a former Empire
Games woman diver, had
a clear-cut win in the
under 16 diving champion
ship.
It is intended' to allow
Pam to return to .Mel
bourne later this year to
undertake special coach
ing in diving.
Dave Johnson beat his
Bankstown team mate
Ron Johnstone to < win
the under 10 breaststroke
in 1 mini. 20.6 sec.
In the men's 100 yards
butterfly Kevin Fitzpatrick
proved too good for his
opponents. , ' < '
Fitzpatrick timed 1 min.
10.7 sec. to win by five
yards from Victorian J.
Coleman with N.S.W. lad
M. Bush third.
Other wins

Bill Heuston the under -
