CRITICISES
EVICTIONS
The continued eviction
of migrants from Com
monwealth hostels was
damaging Australian
publicity overseas, Aid.
H. F. Jensen said today.
Aid. Jensen, a member
of the Randwick Municipal
Council, was commenting
on the Federal Govern
ment's decision to evict
more than 100 migrants
from the Bunnerong Park
Hostel, Matraville.
The Acting - Premier of
New South Wales (Mr.
Heffron > yesterday told a
Randwick Counfcil depu
tation that the Minister
for Immigration (Mr.
Holt! had refused to re
consider the Government's
decision.
Aid. Jensen said: "I
challenge Mr. FunncII
cChairman of Common
wealth Hostels Ltd.) to
establish that it is log
ical to evict decent men
and women because they
insist on being allowed
to cook and provide for
themselves.
"It. is uncivilised that we
should evict them, and the
evictions are damaging
publicity for- Australia.
"The British Press has
featured them and will
continue to do so," he
