U.K. DOWN-\
LONDON (Kemsley)'.
— The birthrate of 176,-
299 for England and :
Wales in the quarterj
ended last March was<
the lowest for any cor
responding quarter since
1942.
It was higher than
in the years just before the
war, according to provi
sional figures issued by the
Registrar-General.
The death-rate for all
ages and the marriage-
rate were the highest
since the corresponding '
quarter of 1940.
Chief reason for the high
death-rate — 205,771 — was
the influenza epidemic.
The fact that Easter this
year fell in the March"-,,
quarter contributed to the :
exceptionally high mar-t>
riage total of 109,187.
