THE VILLACE FAIR.
OPENS ON MIONDAY.
The Village Fair, otherwise known as the
(ilver tChat. Chrstmas hree Pete, will
open on the reserve opposite the Supreme
Sourt, at the foot of iarrackstrcet, on
Monday afternoon at 3 o']cock, and the
official opening ceremony, which is to be
performed by his uc iency The Governor
(Sb- Wiliam Ellison-iacartncy), will take
place at. 8 o'clock the same esenin". This
year's oarniral should appeal strongly to
lovers of the artistic, as half of the spa
cious reserve will be transfornomed into an
old English village. Over 5.000 square feet
of specially prepared scenery will be used
in the production the whole of which is
from the brush of Mr. Phil. Goatcher. The
village will comprise fsree streets ap
proached by a country lane. and will con
tain 26 shops, alf housed in old English
buildings. No detail has been omitted to
add realism to the far. and the' sido
shows will be both charactcristic and in
torceting. The 96-stone chanmpionship tug
of-war, for which 32 teams have nominet
ed, will he a leadingi feature of tho'e car
nival, and the cleats have been erected in
such a position as will ensure an excellent
view for all. The firet round of the con
test will commtence on Monday night, and
the pulls will be continued each evening till
the conclusion of the fair.
The pupils of the metropolitan State
schools will provide musical and gymnastic
displays on the first three evenings of the
fete, and a large stage. fitted with the
necessary scenery, has been erected for
this purpose. The Highland dancing and
piping championships of the State will be
again decided at the fair, and many other
attractions of a diverting and interesting
character will be presented. As usual,
Sthe huge Christmas tree with its load of
gifts will occupy a central position in ithe
village:o' and Father Christmas. with hs
customary generosity, will hand to each
child paying for admission to the grounds
a suitable present. The village will have
its newspaper. which is a re-print of the
London "Times" of October 3, 1798. and
which contains an interesting account of
Nelson's victory at ihe Iattle of the Mile.
Copies of this unique production will be
obtainable on the grounds. The follow
ing bands have offered their services:

phanage, and Caledonian Pipers.

tition, Dorothy Humphries is requested to
supply particulars of her age.
