DISASTROUS GRASS FIRE.
--------- - -
IN MOUINT LOFTY RANGES.
CONSIDEP.ABLE DAMAiGE TO STOCK
AND PROPERTY.
Adelaide, Dec. 8.
A grass fire broke out at Mt. Pleasant
in the Mt. Lofty Ranges yesterday, and
rapidly spread with extremely disastrous re
sults. Many farmers sustained heavy losses
of feed and stock. The fire swept onward
for about ten miles as far as the Murray
flats, and it is estimated that fully 20,000
acres of grass was burnt. and more than
fifty miles of fencing destroyed. At the
Rosebank Estate belonging to Messrs. G.
R. and A. Melrose, the principal damage
done was in the small stud sheep paddocks,
where some of the stud sheep were de-
stroyed, in addition to between 2,000 and
3,000 acres of grass. Fartier east several
farmers lost practically all their grass feed
and in some instances considerable losses in
stock. One farmer estimates that. about
1,000 head of his sheep have been burnt
to death.
