U.S. COIVIEV8UNSSTS SETTING)
SERIOUS PROBLEM FOR F.B.IJ
(BRITISH UNJTED. PRESS)
WASHINGTON, Thursday.- — Large numbers of American Communists have \
been going underground' since the start of the Korean war, Mr. J. Edgar Hoover,
head of the F.B.I, has told the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. 1
The "underground move-
ment among U.S. communists,
Mr. Hoover said, was nothing
new, but in the past few
months it had become wide
spread.
"They have in every way
they possibly could, endeavored
to cover their, trails, to de
stroy records, to destroy docu
ments/to close headquarters, to
find hiding-places for their key
members, and to be prepared
for operations if and when open
war should be declared, or if
and when the Communist Party
finds it expedient to disband in
a technical sense, but in a
factual sense still be in opera
tion," he said.
Mr. Hoover was asked if
Communist activities were
greater in some parts of the
country than others. He said
they were, particularly in large
industrial areas.
"For i n-
stance, we
have large
groups of them
in New York j
City," he said, j
"There are!
many of them
in C a 1 ifornia, j
and in areas !
where there is
the largest in
dustrial acti
vity, such as
Chicago, De- I
t r o i t, Pitts
burgh and
Philadelphia.
"The problem we had in the
last war with the Nazi fifth
column was very small compar-
ed with the problem we have f
today in this country from $
Communist and Soviet activi- j?
ties." . g
