Eight Jap
Ships Sunk

WASHINGTON, Tuesday. —
. The U.S. Navy Department has
announced that American sub
marines have sunk eight more
Japanese ships. t
THE ships were a destroyer, a mine-
layer, a large transport, three
medium cargo vessels, a small cargo
vessel, and a schooner.
A large transport and two medium
cargo vessels ' were also damaged.
These raise to 269 the number
of Japanese .vessels sunk, probably
sunk, and damaged by United States
submarines since the beginning of
the war.
American aircraft bombed the Solo
mons and Aleutians, Japanese targets
were damaged at Balale, Kahili, Vila,
Munda, ana Rekata Bay.
Kiska, in the Aleutians, was strafed
seven times.
Observers in Washington are dis
cussing the possibility of an -Ameri
can invasion of the Aleutians follow
ing the heavy bombing offensive
against Japanese bases there.
United States Air Force chief In
China (Brigadier-General Chennault)
is reported as saying that Japan will
receive heavy, if not decisive, blows
in a very short time.
