Extra Term
For Sydney
Gaolbreoker
Jack Hanchard (24), who, on
October 22, escaped from a
ward at Prince Henry Hospital
after a struggle with a warder
and fled naked into the scrub,
was today, at Central Police
Court, sentenced to 12 months'
hard labor for escaping from
custody, cumulative on the
three years which Hanchard is
serving for house-breaking.
T.TANCHARD was sentenced to a
further three months with hard
labor for assaulting a warder, Keith
Harris.
Warder Harris told how Hanchard,
who was propped up in bed, asked
him for a cigarette and while he was
rolling the cigarette, hit him on the
head with a lemonade bottle.
In a struggle on the floor, Han
chard punched him, causing slight in
juries to his nose, top hp and ear.
A nurse rushed in and tried to help
Harris to secure the prisoner, whose
shirt was torn off.
Hanchard was handcuffed to a
warder throughout the proceedings,
and particular care was taken as he
was led to the cells after sentence
had been imposed.
