R.M.S. PERSIA.
FULL PASSENGER LIST.
Mr. H. W. D. Shallard, the Perth agent
of the P. and O. Company, writes:
"Particulars have now been received
from the head office of the P. and O S.N.
Company in regard to the very sad loss
of the s.s. Persia. The short fact is that
at 1.10 p.m. on December 30, the ship
was struck by a torpedo, and by 1.15 p.m.
the vessel had completely disappeared. The
torpedo struck the ship abaft No. 3 hatch
opposite the boiler room, and the second
engineer, who was saved, is of opinion that
the forward port boiler blew up, this mak-
ing the ship sink so rapidly. Five or six
boats apparently were lowered and five
are accounted for, and although search is
being made for any further survivors, it
is feared there is no hope now. As soon
as the disaster was heard of on the Satur-
day, and that those who were saved in
four of the boats had arrived at Alexan-
dria, the P. and O. Company sent a
telegram to their agents instructing them
to render all possible assistance to those
who had safely passed through so trying
an experience and to pay their hotel and
railway expenses, and to advance the pas-
sengers and crew any money they required
for kit. For public information the fol
lowing lists are appended:-(1) List of pas
sengers on board at: the time of the dis
aster; (2) list of passengers saved; (3)
list of European crew on board; (4) list
of European crew saved. A telegram
was sent to Bombay giving the name of
every passenger on board and the company's
agent at Alexandria wired to Bombay and
Aden the names of those who were rescued.
"In regard to the question raised in the
minds of some as to whether a change of
route will be made by the company as
the result of this terrible accident, it is
not possible for the company with the
important interests it has to serve in other
directions at the present time to send
their steamers via the Cape, but every
possible precaution is taken by them in
connection with the safety of their, ships,
and that this has in some measure been
successful is shown by the fact that although
their vessels have navigated during the
last 18 months, something like four million
miles, the loss of the Persia is the first
disaster which has overtaken their ships,
but it is obvious that at a time like the
present there are necessary risks attending
transit by sea."
