JANUARY HAINDICAP WON BY DOWN
DALE.
A GOOD DAY'S RACING.
The Belmont Park Club held a successful
meeting on Saturday and those present wit
nessed an enjoyable day's racing and were
well pleased with the improvement and
the general appeamrance of the course.
There was a good attendance, and the prin
cipal race, the January Handicap, was won
in good style 'by Dondale. .'here were
only five starters in the Belmont Park
Plate, but Nandillyan Gift, who was first
past the post; .did not run straight do.
spite the efforts of Chandler. Two or three
horses were almost on terms just after en
tering the straight, aid Nandillyan Gift
crowded in on to them. A little laser he
also interfered with two of the leaders.
T. J.. Stratton, the owner of Kelowns,
who ran second, lodged a protest against
Nandillyan Gift for interference and the
stipendiary stewards upheld the protest and
awarded the race to Kelowna, placing Gol
den Orb second and Nandillyan Gift third.
The incident was an unfortunate one. Chan
dler did his best to keep out of trouble, awl
had Nandillyan Gift ran straight he would
probably have won. J. J. O'Hasa, his
owner, has been rather unlucky of late,
as his horse Master Test ran four seconds
in succession, and Nandillyan Gift ran a
.second at the Christmas meeting, and a
little earlier finished a dead bheat with.Syl
vanium, his run having been made just
a little too late. -
Racing began with the Tkial Stakes, and
from 7'to'2Lady Prude firmed to threes.
Osram was well supported at fives and fours.
Ne?marrearra - at' sizes, Miss Fides at

at the start .nd she just led Lady Prude
and Newmarracarra into the straight, while
Osram was handy. Miss Fides was still in
charge at the half-distance, where Osram
was coming fast on the rails. It was an
exciting linih and. Osram won by half
a head, while Lady Mareca, who was a
head a~py, just' cut Lady Prude' out.of
third place. There were only five runnersmm
ii the Belmont Park Plate, and Houseboy

was well in ,e market at 5 to 2, ,olden

supported at fouirs, Kaluwiri at fives and

was moderately supportedat sevens and

the distance, where Miss Fides had charge.
Jillawarra, wbo had been well backed, then
tackled the mare and ran home a good
winner. Ten horses were saddled up for
the Welter Handicap, and Coilhurst was
sent out a 5 to 2 favourite after opemnng
at fours. Osram, who for his prevtods %;n

RACING IN VICTORIA.
:V.A.T.C. BEEETING.
clelbourne. Jan. 16.
Delightfnl weather favoured the Victoria
[ Amateur Turf Club for their Anniversary
meeting at Caunlele on Saturday. The at
tendance. which included his Excellency the
Governor-General and suite, was large, but
in view of the crowd on the coume for the
Boxin- Day meeting, it hardly came up to
expectations. Owners made but limited
use of the scratching pen, consequently
fields were large enough to provide some
fine racing.
There were only six runners for the Haw
thorn Hurdle Race, with which racing
opened, and backers declared solidly for
Rongopai, who, however, cut up very badly.
Jullundur, who was runnign down his
hurdles, went to the front early, but Bit
ter Ale had him well beaten when he came
down at the last hurdle. Widden was ex
pected to shape well, but he showed no
dash at all in the race, and it was left
to Black Step to chase home Bitter Ale,
who, however, won very nicely. Bitter
Ale comes from the Riverina district,
where she was bred, and is decidedly use
ful. Six of the 14 runners in the Koo
karibb Trial were bred in England, but
as it turned out,, home-bred horses were
equal to holding their own. Pretty Bob
Sby failed on the previous Saturday at As
pcndelo Park, but in this race he had a
nice weight, and backers made him a strong
favourite. Noble Bonnie tried to win all
a the way, but she began to stop a furlong
from home. Pretty Bobby then put in
his claim, and wearing her down. went on
and won by a narrow margin from Alor
Star, who made up a lot of ground from
the tern and just cut Noble Bonnie out of
second place.
It was generally believed that Lady
Mooltan was unlucky to lose the Bacot
Handicap, won by Sylvanmore, so when
betting opened over the Anniversary Han
dicap. she was at a ehort price. 'yvu
more was regarded as s er moat dangerous
rival, but utaidwg was also betriended.
Cherubini, however, made ene act of the
race. lLttIe T. Burn. son of the trainer
of therubini, had the mount, and as soon
as the .barner rose he -took Cherubini to
the front, and set a solid pace. Coming
to the turn La4y Maoltan and Sylvan
more began to go afeer the leader, and
were looking very daangerous. Cheruobini,
however, showed no sign of coming back to
them, and when the straight was entered
he hbad the two favourites in trouble. He
kept going to the end and won easily from
Lady' Mooltan, who beat Sylvanmore after
an mteresting tmade for second bonours.
Cherobini is owned by ar. J. Timms, and
as he. is a plucky buyer, the crowd did not
forgot -to give Cherabin a cheer as he
retmuned to the weighing yard. Backers I
came to grief over the Rowena Steeple
chase, as Mynot. who was a hot favourile,
fell atthe fst fenee, and Banisla, who was
also 'well fancied, ran off at the sod watl.
Cranham also came to ried, and the way
was cleaned; j~ r the ascient. Bibbentks,
who won in hollow style from Big Bob. Ar
tillery Bill failed to run up to his FIem
ington form, and' was beaten into thirs
Place.owina is a ooly to baeka.
He failed them at Flemisngto. but on the
strength of his Aspqapdale Pat .euoces he
was made favourite for the Holiday Stkeas.
He ran promiheotl to -the turn, but did
not stay home, Indy Nanise, who was
behind him at Aspendale Park, decisly
turned the- tables on him, as she won
easily from Dais. a good-looking colt by
The; Welkin, who ran rather green, and
Bukowina filled the other place. Eurobin
continued his winninr sequence by aptr
ing thine Toormog Handicap. for which he
was a slighlly. better favourite, than Car?
cre. The pair fought out the finish, but
Eurobin. who ran to the front, despite his
big weight, half a -mile from hoase, won
comfortably, although the judgea s verdict
was only half a head in his fa?o?r. Fol
