LAWN TENNIS.
——
(Notes by "FIfall.")
A number of metropolitan players are
looking forward to the annual tournament
at Bunbury on the 26th and following days.
The trip involves no physical discomfort,
the meeting is admirably arranged and
conducted, and the visitor, no matter from
what direction he comes, can be sure of a
hearty welcome. Moreover—an advantage
almost peculiar to Bunbury—a threatened
three-day surfeit of tennis can be easily
ave:ted by varyib the famillar game with
awsrani and anal d- ishitu all of
which are reDily obeanable tamost as
clene to ones hotel as are the courte. The
iaais of the local tepais club seem to
have been a litre exercised in mind as
to the' poFpricty of holding the tourna
ment at a tie when so any tennis play-.
es are fhitiizi for the 'life of the nation,
and after du3 deliberation to have re
asoled upon the carry on" policy. That
roteison is perfectly justifiable one, and
oUbtless will be duly ptiusl. To this
ed all that is reutrd is that the pro
maoters of the meet shall tee to it that
this yer's tournament in no way inter
fers with recrit. If that be done there
is o roaon in the world why they shonld
a=t flloP the example of other Austia
liar ,ntres, notably Sydney, and go
head with their project. Indeed, it is
the wiser coee to passue. Most of a fre

has to do with the queetien of tempo

ta-y duties flls it impcsaible or even in
a-venient to defend his dual title as
.-hmp on of the South-West. then by all
the s-s edid achievements of Australian
lawn tennis players in defence of Right,
from the iatest eelism-ent, to the heroic
life-giving by Wilding. the diiculty oughtl
to be remaned by the cutting out for this
yar of the Scoth-West champtonship singles
and doubles. 'The? two events could be
replaced by open leyel competitions exactly
milar in all respects but that of title,
while the mired doubles champinaship of the
South-:West the holders of which ere Miss
Trigwell and Nevr, could probably be con
tinued withaout injntice to anyne.

The semi-finals of the Pacific Coast cham-

produced two notable results, when H.
Van Dyke Johns, of Stanford University,
defeated the national champion, W. M.
Johnston, 4—6, 6—4, 6—3, 4—6, 7—5, and
H. Hahn, also of Stanford University, de-
feated C. J. Griffin (national doubles
champion with Johnston), 4—6 6—4, 4—6,
6—2, 7—5. The lady champion, Miss Molla
Brunstedt, the famous Norwegian, was
also beaten, Miss Anita Myers, of San
