SALUTARY
PUNISHMENT
FOR CONSPIRACY
Ship Tender Fraud
LONDON, Saturday.
The five day trial at Leeds of two
former Lot 1 Mayors of Newcastle
and an Admiralty official accused of
conspiracy 'and bribery concluded to
day The former Lord Mayor (Sir
Arthur Munro Sutherland) was found
not guilty on all charges and discharged
while the second former
Lord Mayor (Alderman Robert Stanley
Dalgleish). 71, and Charles James
Butt, 55 of the Admiralty, were
found guilty on all charges'
Dalgleish was sentenced to 15
months impx sonment and fined £500
on each of five charges of corruptly
giving bribes He was also ordered
to pay £1500 towards the cost of the
prosecution Butt was sentenced to
three years penal servitude, for accepting,
bribes and 18 months con-
currently on other counts
Dalgleish was managing director
of Blyth Dry Docks and Shipbuilding
Company and Sutherland a director
of the company They were charged
with conspiracy with Charles Win
herself formerly a manager of the
company, to induce the Admiralty to
accept a tender by fraudulent representation
and also with corruptly
giving Butt £155 as an inducement to
favour their company
Butt was also charged under the
Official Secrets Act with communicating
to Wmtersgill information con-
ceding the prices tendered to the
Admiralty for the construction of
mine sweepers
The charges were based on information
given by Wintersgill who is
serving a sentence of five years
penal servitude for conspiracy receiv
ing babes and stealing
Butt allegedly revealed to Win
tersely that the tender from his company
for two mine sweepers was
£11000 lower per Vessel than the
next lowest tender after which the
company informed the Admiralty
they had miscalculated and amended

and ill health the punishment would
have been more severe
