CAUSE .
PANIC

Panic followed riots
which started after names
of the All-India Govern-
ment were announced.
Hindus and Moslems fought pitch-
ed battles through the streets of
Allahabad on Friday night.
Troops and police are guarding
important points in the city and a
curfew has been ordered.
Titree persons were killed and 42
injured by the rioters, who fought
with knives, brickbats, and lathis
(long bamboo poles).
Police fired on rioting crowds,
wounding seven men.
Rioting began at the conclusion of
a prayer meeting when opposing
crowds of Hindus and Moslems threw
brickbats.
When the names of the All-Indian
Cabinet were announced, rioting
broke out in the old city of Delhi.
One man was killed and 30 were in-
jured in a fight between groups arm-
ed with sticks and knives. A six
hour curfew has been ordered and
public assemblies are' banned.
More stabbings occurred in New
Delhi this morning, although the city
was quieter after the night's clashes.
Sir Shafat Ahmed Khan, non
léague Moslem member of the new
Government, was stabbed seven
times in the head, chest and neck,
while walking in Simla last night.
The attackers. were two young men
who escaped. Sir Shafat was taken
to hospital in an unconscious con-
dition, but is now out of danger.
Heavy Exodus
Thousands of Indians have left
Calcutta-90,000 through one rail-
way station.

ganised to prevent trouble during
the big Moslem festival this week»
Curfew has been ordered at
[ Dakka (eastern Bengal), where
Hindus and Moslems began riot-
ing three days ago.
It was stated officially that fatali-
ties from the Calcutta riots so far
total 2,020, including 707 removed
for burial from hospitals and
streets, 803 taken from burning
buildings, and 500 removed by sol-
diers from the streets.
Police are still collecting dead
from houses in the riot areas, bub
the total dead in those areas is not
yet known.
Injured being treated in hospital
or already discharged total 4,291.
