J^UREMBERG, Thurs.-A shrunken hu man head and a piece of human skin from J
the Buchenwald hell camp were take n into the courtroom before the opening |
of today's session of the war crimes trial.
'yVHE guard who carried them had
been instructed they were to
provide part of the prosecution's
case on concentration. camps.
Goering spotted the exhibits and
excitedly nudged Hess. . ~ ?
Eyes of all the men in the dock
were riveted on these grim products
of the concentration camp system.,
The American prosecutors, how-
ever, quickly ordered them to be
removed as they were not wanted
yet.
' Goering, Shirach, Frank, and
Speer are reconciled to the idea that
they will receive the death penalty,
according to Dr Gustave Gilbert,
Columbia University psychologist.
Dr Gilbert, who has studied the
accused since they were arrested,
told Reuter's correspondent: "Goer-
ing told me that he joined the Nazi
Party because it was the only party
I which had the guts to say 'To hell
with Versailles!'
: "Shirach is resigned and looks
on the death sentence as a just
punishment for getting involved in
an ideology he could not evaluate.
"Frank (who ordered the Lidice
massacre) has been converted to the
Roman Catholic faith since his cap-
ture, and has repented. He de-
clares that Hitler was the embodi-
ment of evil.
"Speer (former German Arma-
ments Minister) says that, while he
feels he has nothing upon his con- ;
science, he is .vicariously responsible j
for the evils of the party. ]
"Julius Streicher, the notorious I
Jew-baiter, boasts that he was right,
and will die a martyr's death."
