meeting of the Northam
Traders' 1
I'ragress
Association
was held in the j
Mechanics'
Institute
0<n Tuesday evening,
when
the Chairman
(Mr.
J.
J.
Golding) presided over a fair
attend-.
ance.
Mr. Golding explained that for quite
a chapter of reasons the Association
had ;not held its monthly meetings
recently, but that in the future they
would occur regularly. ,
Correspondence. ' "

A letter was received from the Nqrthiam
Agricultural Society, in whiqh
the Association were invited to ijrin^
forward matters of particular interest
to them and relating to the .-hov., i
which could be discussed at the *o- I
c iety s general meetings.-lhe letter ,
was received but, in view of the fact
that the Show would not take pla.'-e
for some time, discussion was held
over until the next meeting.
The Northam Race Club wrote as' •-
ing the Association to clo.se their .business
houses at noon instead of 1
p.m. on the three forthcoming rave
days, i.e., March 21, April 21, and May
I 1 '.—After some discussion the irequesi

Deputation from Repatriation
Committee.
A deputation from the Repatriation
Committee, co-s^sting of Messrs. \Y. (
K. Potter and IT. G. Bourne, waited
upon the Association with a of
securing that body's co oftration in
tho matter of guaranteeing £2(10 for
the prize money in connection with
the Fire Brigades' Demonstration,
whioh may be held in Northam next
year.
In introducing the subject, Mr. Potter
pointed out that last year the
Repatriation Committee had approached
the Volunteer Fire Brigades' Board
with a view to having the annual demonstration
held in Northam the present
year. They had lost in fa v or of
Fremantle and they were now taMng
step a- to endeavour to have the demonstration
here next year. Mr.
Bourne and himself had been deputed
to wait on the Traders' Progress As
sociation fend solicit their co-operation,
with the committee in securing the
guarantee -of £200 to provide for the
prize .money in the event of the demonstration
not proving successful.
It was necess'arv that the ^narar^ee
he' forthcoming that week. Tlje ' Repatriation
Committee did not
er that it would "be justified in rovidkner
the guarantee, since the funds
of that committee could not be> jeoparded
even to the small extent < n-
tailed by its doing so. Accordingly
they had decided t 0 approach the
larger body, the Traders' Association,
whioh, indirectly, would be bene-
fited
in it-he event of : the
demonstration
being held in Northam,
and
he
could assure the
members
of
that
body
that the risk involved was (practically
negligible.
The
Council
also
had
been approached
in
rogvard
to
its puttiwg do win A cinder track
and
an adequate water
supply,
and
last
year Councillors had
promised
that
those items would be attended to.
lb'
(the sreaker") was confident that
that
promise would be renewed.
Mr.
Pottea*,
in conclusion, made reference
to
the resultant great
advantages to the
| town
if they were successful in
geti
tin^g the demonstration held in
Northam.
j
Mr.
Bourne said they could take
it
for granted
that
if the Traders
guarj
flnteed the
amount
required
(£200)
I thev would sniffer no loss. Indeed they

to the 'benefit to the

houses, the (iWrntWould be a fine

would
provide the opportunity'for wftieh they

time.
I In his opinion the business people

i n the town were so inadequate.
Since his joining the Association he
hftd attended every meeting amd lipterv-
while from 500 to 1000 visitors
would also be in the town for the oc-
1x1 careful I y to the djiacussions, and
f _ u l I y realised that the chbf aim
of the members was the advancement
oi Northam. He did not think they
were on the right track. The suggested
holding of the Fire Brigades' Demonstration
in Northam, however,
grave them a great opportunity. If it
materialised it would mean that some-

like
^ 500 firemen would journey
Northam to participate in the
After other members of the , As'sociation
had emphasised the im,portance
of trykig 1 to arrange for the • Denionstrati

the guarantee and soliciting
donations.
The Easter
Holidays.
The Chairman said that, in the constitution
eff the Association provision

according to the present rule, holii
da - vs would be held on Good Friday
a ' nd on Easter ^oiildny. If it was

rule he would

i^ire
a notice of motion to
that
effect.
No rule cvf the Association could*
be rescinded without such
notice
of
motion^ and therefore they
could
not
arrive at any decision
in regard
to
the matter that. evening.
Mr. H. G.
Bourne was
elected
to

Council had decided
to
erect a Rest Room

Mr.
Golding
considered
that
the
(juostion of providing a
Rest Room in

becoming
one of
4iore importance.
He would
suggest
Ijhat
a letter be sent

Council,

body the fact
that
the Room was still a
necessity.
Mr.

It
was one of the largest

If this were
done
the
