WAR SAVINGS
Reasons For Lag In
Tasmania
The failure of many persons to realise the
Importance of small Investments, and the
difficulties of n personal canvass, were rea-
sons for Tasmania's relatively small response
to the war savings certificates campaign, ac-
cording to Mr. W. A. Brain, organising sec-
retary in Tasmania.
Mr. Brain said yesterday that propaganda
through the Press, broadcasting, and cir-
culars helped largely, but the most effective
means of convincing the people was by per-
sonal Interview, which was a slow business.
Although a few persons were devoting their
leisure to the work, the assistance of others
would be appreciated, li only for a few hours
each week. There WOT urgent need for
united action to Imprest: on thousands of
fiersons In the Slate the value of their loin
ng uroups and forming new groups.
"The slow start on the campaign because
of the successive postponements of the visit
of the Federal Treasurer (Mr Spender) wa«
the cause of Tasmania's low position in the
early stages." said Mr. Brain. "But the main
reason Is that the people have failed to
realise that to win the war money Is as
essential as men. or they believe that Ihe
money they em lend is loo small to count."
