Topical Turf Notes.
Now visiting Australia {s <a lady
from New Zealand, and she is, be
lieve me, hot stuff warmed up. Her
name is Cuddle, and she won the St.
George Stakes of £750, weight for age,
of nine furlongs, in a please yourself
fashion.
K. Voitre, the New Zealand hoop, was
in the saddle, and what a formidable pair
Cuddle and her jockey made. Cuddle went
out to an early lead and critics were not
beyond condemning Voitre's tactics as
suicidal. Cuddle, however, is not the or
dinary sort of mare. She won without
much trouble from a top notcher in St.
Fervent, with Young Idea in third plae.
In the Australian Cup, Cuddle has 9.2
to carry over the two and a quarter mile
journey and should, in my opinion, not
be troubled to win thi6 important event.
The mare stands up to her work in a remarkable
fashion, but then all good Rew
Zealand prads do the Bame. The little
Dominion is in the habit of breeding topnotchers,
and Cuddle is just another of
the big band of brilliant horses to visit
Australia.
The mare is owned by Mr. E. J-
Murphy, aqd is a six-year-old by that
famous racehorse, and particularly good
sire, Psychology. Her dam was Caress.
THE DISAPPOINTMENT
The bis disappointemnt of the St-
Oeoree Stakes was the Melbourne Cup
winner, Marabou, who was defeated three
furlongs from the post, and weakening
badly, he finished in front of only one
other runner in Ismarue. However, nine
furlonfirs miichfc not hive «cacUy suited
Marabou, who without a doubt is a splendid
horse and will probably make amends
for his failure ia the near future.
Others to show up prominently at Caulfield
last weds: were Belle Silhouette,
Archne, Heros and Bunsby Gaze, the letter
candidate winning the Salisbury
Welter (second division) at 25 to 1.
Special attention must be drawn to Bell
Silhouette, the Beau Fils five-year-old
mare, 'who "was ridden to victory by
Neville Pereival in the Oakleigh Plate. A
few months ago the mare was racing in
novice events in the country and in winning
the Oakleieh Plate sho defeated the
martest sprinters in Australia. Her
8»i»
time equalled the Australasian record for
live and a half furlongs, and she went
out at 20's. A crack performer in
Arachne was second, and fieros, who has
snows good form in recent w«ek». was
third.
SOME TIPPINO
This paper had a real day out last
Saturday. For the Aidful Handicap- (first
division), first, second and third were
tipped in th( right order, namely, Jongieur,
fiajkumar, and Kerry. In the next
•ace, the AkLtul Handicap (second division),
the winner ittarbno was selected.'
the following race, the Hopetoun Handicap,
Beggar tjueen was selected and
nron. For tne main event of the day, the
"eDruary Handicap, Mistletoe was selectedso
win, and the Psychology mare won by
two lengths, paying 14 to 1 straight-out,
and S.O. and 18/ for a place on
the tote. Samaden, ^ho pas also selected
as the next best bet, finished second. In
the last race Fast Patrol was given, and
won, and also Insolent, who finisbed third.
Five winners and four placed hoises were
given, for the meeting.
JONGLEUR AND TONGNAHURIC
Mr. J. W. Anderson's two-year-old colt
Jongleur appears to be a horse above
the average. He did not strike winning
form until the Christmas meeting, but
displayed his true form by following Hp
his Christmas win with another, and repeated
again last week.
The Yodelist «oli, despite the fact that
he carried top weight (9.0) ran a wonderful
race, his superior pace enabling him
to overhaul the pacepiaker Kerry I,ass,
and once entering the straight the issu«
was never in doubt.
' Last month Tongnahuric changed hands
for 100 guineas, at a sale of horses, juid
that price was a good bargain. His stakes
money for two wins amounts to £175, and
as he was only handicapped at 7.11 when
he ^on last Saturday, in the W-A.T.C.
City Handicap, it will be a while before
weight starts to trouble the Legionaire
.gelding. When he captured the Belmont
Plate a fortnight ago he was at 10's. Last
week 10's and 8's were freely offered about
him.
WORLD'S RICHEST RACE
The Santa Anita Handicap, to be decided
in California next month, is the
world's most richly endowed racing
n.j«iitiiiniiiiniiiiirnTnuiHTtiiiinininiitimTiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitititiiiiiiiiiiHitiiiniu
event. It carries £20,000, and Discovery
has been rated the best hone engaged,
having 9.4. Last year's winner, Asuear,
has 8.6, while the iEbglish, candidate.
Flamenco, has 211bs. more to carry.. Thereare
26 horses on the minimum, 7.2.
South Africa is the dream country as
far as racing is concerned. The steward
in control of race meetings cannot inflict
punishment beyond fining an alleged
wrong doer £10. What's the fare to South
Africa?
