London, August 27.
President Roosevelt has directed the
Public Printer .at Washington to print
all Presidential messages, other than
White House documents, in accordance
with they rules of phonetic spelling, as
recommended by the Spelling Reform
Committee, of which Mr. James Bran
der Matthews. Professor of Dramatic
Literature at the Columbia University,
is the Chairman, and which com
imitteo is being financedl by Mr. Andrew
Carnegie.
The American newspapers are resist
ing the innovation. Some treat the
President's order sarcastically, while
other journals are amazed at Mr.
Roosevelt's new departure.
