FETE AT THE CHILDRENS
HOSPITAL.
The strawberry fete in aid of the funds for
furnishing the Angas wing of the Children's
Hospital was held on the grounds of that in-<*>
stitution on Saturday afternoon and evening.
A number of handsome marquees were erected
od the lawn and were filled with good things,
for which there was no lack of customers. The
largest of the refreshment stalls was managed
by Lady Colton, Sire. Beach, Mrs. Robin,
Mrs. Dr. Wigg, and the Misses Bttaob,
Brannd, Gal well, Cox, Crompton, Cartis.
Drews (4}, Hill (2}, WiLson and Wright, and
the youtig ladies of the flower mission. Another
refreshment stall was 6erved by Lady Downer,
Airs. Wright, and the Misses B. Curtis, J.
Harry at, and Marshall; the sweets stall by
Mesdames Fowler, Milne, and Swift. The
produce stall was attended to by Meedames
Bullock, Allan Campbell. A. Campbell, L.
Glyde, C. H. Goode, Knight, and Way.
Among the amnsements were a Panoh-and-
Jndy show and a phonograph. There was a
large and fashionable attendance both in the
afternoon and evening, his Excellency the
Lieutenant-Governor being among those
present). The City Volunteer Band was in
attendance. _ The fete committee, which has
been indefatigable in making arrangements for
a most successful function, consisted of the fol
lowing:—HisExceUenoy the Lientenant-Gover
nor, Lady Colton, Mesdames Bollock, A. Camp
bell, W. M. Campbell, Colwell, Glyde, G. a
Knight, A. T. Magarey, Robin. EL Scott, J.
Simmons, Y. Wright, Beach^C. H. Goode,
Dr. Swift. J. Fowler, A. E. Wige, Hayman,
the Hon. Dr. Campbell, Drs. Curtis, Lendon.
Laurence, Leader, Corpe, Messrs. Jag. Mar
shall, and A. T. Magarey.
In the boardroom a concert was held, a
varied and attractive programme being pre
sented. It was, however, unfortunate that a
larger hall was not obtained, as several hun
dred people were uuable to gain admission.
The room was crowded to excess lonp bufore
the time for commencing wa3 announced, and {
the atmosphere became unbearable. The
pleasure of those listening to the various per
formers wss thus discounted to a gresx extent,
while it slua militated agaiatt the success of
those who had given their services. When
the seating capacity of the room was taxed to
the utmost degree a charge for admission was
made to all of the passages and entrances,
while those who took up positions near
the windows were also called upon to
contribute a small amount. Miss Florrie
Campbell, who undertook the arduous task of
arranging the programme, deserves great credit
for tbe manner in which she carried out her
arrangements and the varied character of the
numbers given. Mr. Walter Bender's ser
vices were secured, and his three recitations
formed the principal items of attraction. His
first number was Mark Twain's "European
gulden," which was admirably given, and met
with warm approval. This was followed with
Max Adeler's description of "The new
editor" from "Out of the Huriy Early."
Mr. Bentley'e contributions to the programme
concluded with "Our family vault," an
admirable writing from the pan of an unknown
author. Miss Guli Hack, A.R.C.M., was
heartily applauded for her excellent rendering
of "I hardly know" (Kjerulf), and Henschel's
"Spinning song," which were -bracketed.
Mi* C. Wyatt was heard to advantage in
"The year's at the spring" (Hartog). Mr. K.
Malcolm contributed Henznnroeder'a " Chou
art my queen," and also gave a spirited render
ing of "Star of Bethlehem" (Stephen Adams).
Miss F. Campbell played a piano solo, which
was heartily appreciated, while Miss Pater
son played a 'cello solo and gained the hearty
approval of the audience. Mr: Ralph sang
"My old Dutch," a coster eons, which
"caughton," and the programme concluded
with a string quintet of Schumann's, which
was admirably played by the Misses K. Way
and Shepherd, and the three Misses Fafer-
Eon. I
