NOXIOUS WEEDS.
-I am, ~&c.',
FARMER.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir—Allow me to thank the Hon. J.J.
Duncan and the Hon. T.C. Baker for their
sensible remarks made on Wednesday in the
Legislative Council [?] noxious weeds. This
Legislative Council re noxious weeds. This
Act has been a curse to South Australia from
the day it was first framed. Take the Scotch
thistle, the variegated thistle, the cockspur.
Mother Maume, sheep weed, &a, all of which
in turn have bad a hue and cry raised
against them. There have been thousands of
pounds expended under compulsory legisla
tion in attempting to eradicate the three
former of the above-mentioned, and now
they are all three admitted to be g:>od
fodder plants; yes, some of the best
we have. The other two have passed
away and are forgotten, perhaps, because
legislation was never brought to bear upon:
them. And now people are yelling " Beware I
of the etar thistle," and unfortunate land
owners are being compelled to etpend money
in making futile attempts to destroy thistles
which are no more like the true star thistle
than a sensible man is like an average member
ot Parliament. South Australia is not a rich
country, but if ebe were, verily her legislators
would make hw poor.-
