THE DAUGHTER OP THE REGIMENT
The officers of the Seventeenth Regiment
of French Chasseurs have adopted
little girl as the ' mascot' of the regiment.
It is unusual for French regiments
to have a 4 mascot,' or pet, aB is so frequently
the case with British and American
regiments. However, daring the
Spanish-American war the French heard
a good deal about American ' mascots,'
and the illustrations of them in the
French papers took a strong hold on the
people, for they have a great love of
novelty. DogB and goats are not as
popular among Frenchmen as among
Anglo-Saxons, and a little baby girl
seems to them a far better regimental
pet, and therefore the adoption of one is
regarded as a great improvement on the
original idea. The little girl, who has
the good fortune to be the daughter of
this particular regiment, was found
deserted in a railway carriage at Rambauillet,
where the regiment is stationed,
and would have been taken to a foundling
asylum had not the good-natured
officers decided to adopt her.
