SPLATT, WALL, AND COMPANY.
A FLOURISHING BUSINESS.
No firm in Western Australia is better
known than that of Messrs. Splatt, Wall,
and Co., machinery merchants and elec
trical engineers, who have recently open
ed new and up-to-date premises in Pier
street; a few yards from Hay-street. For
several years prior to their taking over
the new warehouse, Messrs. Splatt, Wall,
.and Co. were located at the corner, of
Hay and Pier streets, but their business
increased to such an extent that they
were compelled to secure more suitable
premises, in order to successfully carry
on their operations. Mr. J. Talbot
Hobbs drew up the plans for a new build
ing, and the result is that to-day this en
terprising firm are established in a hand
some structure, fitted up in a manner in
keeping with a flourishing business. The
contractors were Messrs. Vincent and
Son. The appearance and general ar
rangements of the recently-completed
building reflect credit on all concerned.
The premises occupy three blocks in Pier
street,' and consist of a semi-basement
and two floors above. Provision, how
ever, has been made for the erection of
three more storeys, and it is expected
that, owing to the continuous expansion
of the firm's trade, these additions will,
at no distant date, become necessary. ,A
member of the firm showed a reporter
from this journal over the premises yes
terday. Every floor is stocked with the
latest machinery 'and appliances. In
the basement are stored metal ceilings,
oils, steel wire rope-our representative'
was infdrmed that there were "miles
more" of the latter material arriving in
a few days-and other lines, for which
the firm are noted. The basemen't is
also used as a workshop for turning out
small electrical appliances and effecting
repairs. On the floor above is the show
room, containing a' stock of motors, dy
namos, and other material, equal, it.is
claimed, to everything of the same kind
that could be found in any of the Austra
'liar'States. The appearance of the show
room is rendered additionally attractive
by 'the ceiling-one of J. H. Eller's
metal pattern-which is of handsome de
sign. The firm have a large stock of this
class of ceiling, for which they are the
sole agents, and which forms a leading
feature of their business. A fine collec
tion of arc-lamps, ranging from one
thousand to five thousand.candle-power,
is distributed over the showroom, while
miles of wires and cables 9n reels are in
cluded:in the material stored in this part
of the premises. The top storey is used
for the storage of light material, includ
ing lamp-shades, insulators, and incan
descent lamps. Of the latter there is a
mnagnificent assortment, numbering fully
20,000. Among othernmachinery and ap
pliances to be found on the premises are
steam engines and boilers, blowers,
Quimby's rotary pumps. English leather
belting,:electric meters. asd pulleys. The
various departments of the building are
connected by telephone with the offices
on the first floor, and an electric lift is
in course of construction for the purpose
of conveying goods from the basement
and ground floors to the top storey. All
the electric lifts in use in Perth have, our
representative was informed, been fitted
up by Messrs. Splatt, Wall, and Co., 'and
a number of these elevators are being
prepared for other establishments. Since
the initiation of their business in the.
State the firm have erected 14 complete
electric plants for power and lighting
purposes for different towns apd mines,
and plants for Midland Junction, Su
biaco, and Bunbury are at present in
course of erection. Owing to the rapid
increase in their business since their es
tablishment in Western Australia. seve
ral years ago,,Messrs. Splatt, Wall and
