ROAD COLUSIÓN
Ambulance and Tram-Car
Passenger Injured
Extensi%'e damage was caused to a
motor ambulance and a double-decked
tramcar when they collided on the main
road, near Springfield, Moonah, about 1
p.m. yesterday. A passenger sitting in
the front of the ambulance was taken to
hospital.
The ambulance, which was being driv-
en by Mr, M. W. Goram, of Bathurst
Street, Hobart, was on its way to the
Show ground. Mr. T. O'Rourke, aged
31, a motor bicycle builder, residing at
210 Murray Street, was a passenger in
the front seat, beside the driver.
The driver stated that near Spring-
field there was a large sheet of water,
reaching from the over-filled gutter to
the tram line, which was a single ono
on that section of the road. As the
ambulance was passing through tha
water at a speed of about 15 m.p.h. it Is
presumed that some slurry underneath
caused it to slew across the tram track in
the way of an approaching double-deck-
ed tram car, No. 20. The left hand front
part of the ambulance struck the tram
with force, and both were extensively
damaged. The front left wheel and
axle of tho ambulance was bent, the
windscreen smashed, and part of the
body structure smashed. The wood-
work and windows of the lett hand front
part of the driver's portion of the tram
car was smashed and partially torn
away.
The driver of the tramcar (Mr. J.
Cheyne) was not hurt, and the driver of
the ambulance suffered nothing worse
than cuts on three fingers of the left
hand an on his left ear. His passenger,
however, -who was sitting on the side
of the vehicle which took the force of
the collision, was admitted to the Pub-
lic Hospital, with an injured lett
shoulder and a lacerated wound on his
left ear.
The ambulance was towed back to
the city for repair, and the tramcar
was able to travel under its own power
to tho city shed.
