Rich soil neededl
for delphiniums I
If you propose to plant delphiniums i
this winter, lime the soil now. They revel \
in lime, which must be applied at least a j
month before digging in manure. i
The soil can hardly be
made too rich for delphi
niums, which are gross
feeders, so give them a
generous supply of decay
ed cow or stabfe manure.
Work it right through
the soil as evenly as pos
sible. so it will be readily
available to the roots us
soon as they begin to
spread.
Plant them in clusters
of half a dozen around
the garden. In that way
they will contribute more
to the floral effects than
if grown in a mass.
The color will be en
hanced by those of other
plants. Blue is one of the
most acceptable colors in
the garden, but needs as
sociation with red or vel-
ow to prevent it from
being dull.
As soon as growth ap
pears above the soil pro
tect It from slugs and
snails, and do not depend
on the lime that has been
dug ln to have any effect
on these pests.
All the fender shoots
n».v disappear in one
night if baits arc not
laid.
Liquid manure can be !
applied when the flowers!
begin to form. !
It is not essential, but '
the size and quality of the
blooms will be improved
if the plants are fed in ;
this way.
Apply the liquid only
when the soil is wet.
