THE EIGHT HOURS CELEBRATION.
To-day the anniversary of the eight hours
movement will be celebrated by a demonstra-<*>
tion, which will be held on the old Exhibition
Grounds. For weeks past the Eight Hours
Celebration Union committeehavebeenwork
ing with commendable zeal. and as the result
of their labors to day's carnival promises to be
one of the most successful on reoord. No stone
baa been left untamed by the committee to
insure success, and if old Sol is in a bright
mood the prooeasion of the societies with
their artistically painted banners will be
well worth witnessing. As usual, the
procession will start from the centra
of Victoria - square, and after marching
through the principal streets will proceed to
the old Exhibition Grounds. A special feature
in the procearion will be 400 or 800 of the Trade
Society men employed in Gawler. The sup
porters of the eight hours movement at the
modem Athens will arrive by special train at
the Adelaide railway-station at about half-put
9 o'clock, and will be met by the liocomotive
Band, beaded by which they will march to
Victoria-square. Some 22 societies will take
part in the procession, which promises to be
an unusually lengthy one. At the Exhibition
Grounds a long and interesting programme of
sports will be cm oft, and in addition there will
be various side shows and other amusements.
Doting the afternoon the committee will enter
tain his Excellency the Governor [and party.
This year the free gift distribution is on a
monster scale, 12.000 tickets having been
issued. The drawing is to take place on the
ground, and as the prizes are valuable no
little interest will attach to it. The
following is the order of procession,
which from Victoria-square will proceed up
King William-street to Carrie-street, west^o
Morphett street, north to Hindley-street, east

The Port Adelaide societies wfll celebrate the
day by a picnic at Tonena T«l?nfl r The com
mittee have engaged the fine ateamtnga Ade
laide, Eleanor, and Yatala, so that there is
ample provision for conveying excursionists
from the Port wharfs to the island. A very
low fare has been fixed, so that besides the
representatives of the societies there should be
a crowd of visitors. Steamer tickets will also
give the holders a chance of securing
one of the many free gifts offered. A
long programme of aquatic and other
sports has been provided, and there will
be amusements of all loads on the grounds.
His Excellency the Governor and mite with
members of the Ministry will visit the island
in the morning. The proceedings will com
mence at 6.30 a.m., when a procession will
march from the Working Men's A«a?finKp n
Hall, Oak-street, proceeding east to Commer
cial-road, thence to St. Vincent-street, and
west to iMundy-street, along North-parade to
the Gustom-House. turning into Oommercial
road, thence to St. Vincentstreet to Todd
etreet, proceeding along Maciaren wharf to
the place of embarkation. Three brass bands
have been engaged. In the evening a ball will
be held in the Port Adelaide Town Hall.
