Fiji To Make Up j
Banana Shortage
BRISBANE, Thursday. — Increased im
ports of Fijian bananas are likely to re
sult from the local shortage caused by
the recent dry spell, and the re-appcar
ance of bunchy top on the South Coast
plantations.
The manager of the Committee of Dir
ection of Fruit Marketing (Mr B.
Flewell-Smith) said today that he did
jnot expect that sufficient quantities
would be brought into the country to
; afTcct prices for the local product. "Con
sumers must get accustomed to paying
a price that will return growers a profit,"
jhc said.
! Although the importation of 40,000 cen
tals of Fijian bananas a year was al
lowed. importations, so far. had been cx-
'(.optionally light, he added, because the
price had been too high, compared with
1 Australian bananas.
! Pineapples processed at local chnncric
jin the past 12 months have reached re
cord figures. Last winter 200,000 case.
were handled, nnd it is expected that the
amount processed during the summer will
bo about the same. Growers have re
ceived 4/G a case net at their station of
