WOMEN CARRIED TO
SAFETY .
Thrilling Rescue Scenes
LAUNCESTON, Monday.— With tho
trngcQy. of tho Inveresk rescues.itherc
was associated a degree of igrim
comedy, showing wonderful fortitude
under appalling vcondltious.
Those leaving the inundated suburb
gathered at tho edge of tho water in
Invennay road/. Women and children
wore lifted on to motor lorries, which
wore backed as fur as possible into
the water.
Bouts approached' as near nsi they
could,- .and . volunteers carried! tho
women and children and such gear
as they brought with ihciu across tho
Intervening gap. j
It was exhausting work. ;
Rnfn was sweeping down tho : road
nearly all tho time, tho flood waters
were bitterly cold, and the burdens,
if not always heavy, woro awkward to
handle.
Some Went Pick-a-Back
At first the women were carried In
tho men's arms, but that, obscured the
vision, and cramped muscles, and the
pick-a-back method was then
adopted.
Mishaps occurred, of course. 'One
small nmn, carrying a big woman,
backed up to the boat, gave a twitch
of his shoulders like a wheat lumper,
and shot his burden In head first.
"The devil," she exclaimed, "does he
put em all in like that?" And she
laughed.
Seen by representatives of The
HeniM, the Mayor (Cr. Osborne) said
that at present thore was no shortage
of food, but qjothing was urgently re
quired, particularly underclothing for
men, women' and children, also
towels.
