MIDNIGHT HOTEL
FIRE
Exciting Escapes
childrens dog which gave
warning
A disastrous fire at 1.30 a.m.
today at Yarragon about 70 miles
from .Melbourne, destroyed the
Commercial Hotel; Bellmaine's
General Store and the Cheerio
Cafe in Main street.
The loud barking of the childrens
dog alarmed the household at the
hotel, a wooden building of 25 rooms
erected more than 40 years ago.
Mrs Williams (the licensee), her
husband and two young children,
and other inmates, escaped in their
night atttire,
Mr Williams seized a bag con-
taining £80 mostly in notes, but
dropped it in. the passage and it
could not be saved,
The flames quickly spread to Bell-
maine's store, which with its large
stock of groceries, was totally de.-
stroyed.
In the Cheerio Cafe adjoining the
store, only the furniture was saved.
Tho fire started in the Commercial
Hotel, but as no fires wore in use, the
cause of the outbreak is a mystery.
Although a large crowd collected to
fight the fire, little could be done as
they were handicapped by lack of
water.
