CHAMBER CONCERT given
A t the chamber concert of the Musi
cal; Soqloty, on Saturday night Schu
mann's E flat quintette for pianoforte
and strings was tho chief attraction.
The Work, by which tho composer
first gained European fame, Is as 'ef
fective as over In its melodious wealth
and Ipiaginatlve prcgnacy. Miss Elea
nor King, . Mr Alberto Zelman; Miss
Vera Lucas. Miss Dorothy Roxburgh,
and Mr Alfred G. Rutfirnd deserved
and received the hoarty thanks of their
hearers for a spirited and wcll-
halanced performance, in which the
brilliance of the allegro, the solemnity
of the mtircia (with. Its. weird trio),
the frolicsome scherzo, arid the final
. delicate-. fughetta were ..pleasingly- ex
hibited. , '
Miss Nora Dolany, In her perform
ance of Beethoven's Waldsteln-Sonata
(C major, op. 53), displayed a general
acquaintance with tho emotional tenor
of tjio composition ahd a praiseworthy
technical equipment, especially smooth
scale- Work. Hastiness,' however, pro
bably 'duo to nervousness, prevented
her doing justice to the sonata and to
herself, which was evidenced by dis
torted rhythms and wrong notes. Tho
talented- young player may be advised
to niakc herself suro In loss ambitious
concert pieces, of which there is a
large ejid delightful, variety, and to
postpone the public appearance in
great' master works, to years of riper,
experience.
Miss Gertrude Carrnthers gave a
careful atid conscientious interpreta
tion of. Saint Saens' violin Romance,
op, 43. Miss Cocllia Curtln and Miss
May; M. Renshaw ' contributed vocal
pieces, and Miss Madge Sissons. was
the able accompanist. .
