ROSE SHOW
Annual Display at City Hall
Fine Blooms Exhibited
A fine display of blooms was seen at
the annual rose sliow of- the Amateur
Horticultural Society, which was held at
tho City Hall yesterday. The number!
of entries was exceedingly satisfactory,
and tho attractiveness of the exhibition
was enhanced by a splendid display of
cut flowers which, however, were not
Included in the competitive classes. A
striking display was a collection of
ferns and shrubs In tho centre of tho
hall, which was contributed by the cura-
tor of the Botanical Gardens (Mr. J.
Wardman). Tile show was well patron-
ised by the public, both in the after-
noon and in the evening, and a success-
ful show in every way was the result of
the efforts of the secretory (Mr. M. J.
Walker), and the committee.
Owing to the fact that the early
blooms aro just finished, and the main
crops are still lh bud, combined with
the hot weather, made it a difficult mat-
ter to obtain good blooms,, but In the
circumstances the display was a credit-
able i one, and in the opinion of the
judges was better than last year's show,
and quite up to the average.
' The award for the best bloom in the
show went to Mr. J. L. Robertson, who
exhibited a fine Dean Hole pink bloom.
A Mabel Morbo, shown by Mr. F. Ham-
mond, was a particularly fine >oIIow
bloom. There was a great improvement
in the restricted classes, which are con-
fined to exhibitors who have'not won a
first prlzo in the particular class pre-
viously, or in that class in the open sec-
tion. Many of the blooms wero up to
the standard of the open classes. Some
of the finest wero a Frau Karl Druschki
exhibited by Mr. M. J. Walker, a Cha-
teau do Clos Volget, shown by Mrs. W.
A. Cane, and a Columbia exhibited by
1 Mrs. A. McGregor.
