The safe arrival at India is announc-
ed of the Australian-bred Lord Setay.
In mentioning this matter "Beacon"
says there v,erc no direct steamers from
Australia to India for months, conse-
quently Lord Setay -bad to be sent
"half round the world" in order to
reach bis destination, beginning 'and
winding up with a long railway jour-
ney. From Melbourne he was sent to
Newcastle (N.S.W.) by rail, thence by
'steamer to Burma. Transhipped at
Rangoon, he landed in Calcutta, after a
stifling, passage up the Hoogly in the
hottest time of the year. Then follow-
ed a three days and nights train jour-
ney to Dehra Dun. Lord Setay never
missed a feed during this long and try-
ing journey, and arrived fit almost* to
race at once.
There were 1!) final acceptors for the
V.R.C: Grand National Hurdle Race on
Thursday. The top-weight is 11.6. fti
Sandulc, and, should that horse win, it
will bo the best performance in that
line since Obi won in 1913, carrying
11.7. The heaviest weight successfully
handled in the Grand National Hurdle
Race was 11.13, by Don Quixote, and
that was as far back as 1884. In the
lengthy history of the .V.R.C. Grand
National Hurdle Race, a three-year-old
was only once successful, and that was
The Yeoman, who won in 1887. As the
only three-year-old entered this year/
Nautical-is no longer in the race. The
Yeoman's record cannot be equalled.
Nor aro winners at four years old a
conspicuous feature of the race. As a
matter of foot, Sir Peter, Dizzy, Red-
leap, Fossil, and Obi arc the only re-
presentatives of that agc who have sub-
scribed their names tp the winning list.
Among the final acceptors this year
there are only two of four years old,
Haoma and Fiscom; while those of a
year older are almost na scarce, that
collection consisting only of Truepenny
and Shivandcr. There is, however, a
big percentage of veterans, whose ages
range from 9 lo 12 years, the' distinc-
tion of being the oldest ol the acceptors
belonging to Bill Taft, who will soon bo
l8 years old,
The Victorian Grand National Hurdle
Race to be run at Flemington this after»
noon may be won by Tcleeles or True-
penny. British Arch and Merry Bob
may be the othor ones to run promin-
ently.
