Tax Man Gets His
Pound Of Flesh
DARWIN, Monday. — The Taxation Commissioner
is still demanding his pound of flesh from unexempted
aborigines who have no citizenship rights.
Last'year he told Albert Namatjira.i

similar notice.
Both had been making consider
able sums by the sweat of their
uneducated brows and a paint

Latest to be caught in -the net- are
Joe Parry and his brother from the
Daly River. They arc unexempted
half-castes.
I They have no vote, are not al-
I lowed to drink liquor, not entitled to
any benefits of citizenship except
| paying tax.
They've been growing peanuts on
the banks" of the Daly for some
years, selling them to local stores
and making just enough money to
keep themselves and a few friends.
This year Joe decided to go buffalo
shooting and applied to the Director
of Native Affairs for permission to
shoot on Manassie Aboriginal Re
serve on Van Dieman's Gulf.
White men are not allowed on the
reserve, uui, r-any, atuuiuiug i ><j inw,
is an aborigine, so permission was
granted.
He has been up there for the last
six months making his dangerous
runs on horseback after galloping
wild buffalo.
He shot a hundred or so, and sold
the hides.
Now the Commissioner has told
the Parrys that they must pay tax—
and has sent them fprms for tneii
last five years' earnings.
