Population.
The number of inhabitants in South Australia at the
end of 1885, exclusive of the Northern Territory and
of the aborigines, was estimated by the Government
Statist at 313,423, namely, 163,641 males and 149,782
females. When, however, we compare this numoer
with our vast territory we find that in South Australia
Proper there is but one settler to every 770 acres of land !
It is true that there are extensive tracks of country in
the interior unfit for cultivation, and which cannot be
utilized except for pastoral purposes ; yet, apart from
these, we have "room enough for all"-comers. We
have no wish to use the language of exaggeration.
Our object is simply to describe things as they
are. We think, however, in consideration of the fact
that the resources of the colony are practically in
exhaustible, that we are fully justified in stating that
if all the unemployed in Great Britain who are industrious,
healthy, frugal, and temperate, could be transported hither
within a reasonable time, the great majority of them
would find amongst us a prosperous and a happy home.
