TO
LETTER CROPS FROM STUBBLE.

The original findings of the Waite
Research Station of South Australia
in regard to the advantages to be. derived
from introducing Sulphate of
Ammonia into the manurial practice
for growing stubble-grown cereals
have now been sufficiently extended
by many workers in all States over a
period of five years, to enable a conclusidff
being made for the benefit
of farmers. It may now be consi
dered certain that on the majority of
cereal farms in all states which enjoy
a rainfall of over 18 inches and
which have been cultivated to cereals
only for any considerable period, profitable
increases in the yield of oats
or barley, either as hay or grain
when sown on stubble may be enjoyed
by sowing with an equal part
mixture of Super and Sulphate of
Ammonia. It remains for farmers
to take full advantage of this contribution
of science. One may even
go so far as to assert that unless
Super is accompanied by Ammonia
when applied to stubble it will not,
under the conditions mentioned
above, exert its customary benefit.
This explains why many farmers
have already lost faith in Super
alone for these crops. It is not that
the soil does not need Phosphate but
that it needs Nitrogen so much more
that it cannot continue to produce
satisfactorily without Nitrogen, and
no other plant food can take its place
At least 1 cwt. of the 1 & 1 mixture
of Super and Ammonia should
be applied per acre. Lesser quanti
ties, although almost certainly better
than any quantity of Super without
Ammonia, may disappoint the user
through lack of a sufficiently spectacular
effect. A bag (160 lb.) to
the acre is most satisfying and yet
not too great a quantity to get to
run through an ordinary drill or
combine. It is recommended also
that unless the user has been previously
convinced of the advantages
due to 1 & 1, it is advisable to sow a
portion of the crop with Super only,
so that comparison may be made and
confidence thus gained.
