A MAN BURNT TO DEATH.
The Meredith correspondent of the Geelong
Advertiser writes " I regret to have to state
thatj a well-known miner of Sreigiitz, named
William Lord, lost his lite in endeavouring to
beat out the extensive buBh fire which raged
oetween Steiglitz and Maude on Tuesday last.
From what I can learn, poor Lcrd was taken ill
when assisting to beat out the fire in Grundy's
paddock. Nevertheless he worked hard in the"
ranges, assisting his neighbours, until about 3
o clock on Taesday, when he saw that a fire had
broken out in the direction of his homestead, and
he at once hurried away. He was never after
wards seen alive. Information that he was
missing was given to the police on Wednesday,
and during the whole of Thnrsday, Friday, and
Saturday hie body was searched for, without suc
cess, by thirty horsemen and fully fifty diggers on
foot; Afelast,onSunday evening, the body wasfound
Anfcu yoang men named Richards and Rippin.
All the clothes were burnt off the body, which pre-
seated a shocking spectacle. During the progress
of the fires the homestead of Mr. BnraB had a
very narrow esoape, and a singular scene was wit
nessed. Mrs. Burns, who is paralysed, was ia the
home, and to save her she was conveyed in a sort
of spdan chair aad placed in the middle of a
waterhole, where she remained until all danger
was past, and it is satisfactory to learn that
neither by fire nor water was she much injured."
Oar ; Stieglitz correspondent corroborates the
information given about the sad fate of Mr. Lord,
and adds — He leaves a widow with four young
children, and another shortly expected, totally
unprovided for.
