A correspondent sends us the'report of
an inquest held on the body of a lad
named Fredrick Hartman, who was
drowned at Cobar, New South Wales, on
the 14th January, from which we clip the
following.—The medical testimony of Dr.
Geldard was to the effect that death had
been caused by asphyxia from immersion
in water. While making the post-mortem
examination the doctor found that the
right lung was extensively diseased and
on searching for the cause he discovered
a wire nail two and a half inches in length
impacted on tine right bronchia, where it
had remained for about six years, the
boy having, when about three years of
age, put a nail in his mouth from whence
it must have slipped into the air passage."
Our correspondent adds, "It was known
that the boy had swallowed the nail, and
he had been taken to various medical men
who were .unable to relieve him. It is a,
wonder it did not cause the child's death
long ago."
