Dandenong Council Asked To Borrow
£1150 To Build New £3450 Nursery
School At Dandenong
DECISION DEFERRED TILL NEXT MEETING
FACED WITH A WAITING LIST OF 167, and carrying on in
quarters which are totally inadequate, the Dandenong Nursery School
Committee last Monday night waited on the Dandenong Council by way
of deputation, urging council to borrow £1,150 to be used as a subsidy
to obtain grants of double that amount in order to finance the erec
tion of anew Nursery School in the Park capable of providing, with
existing facilities, for an attendance of about 90 children.
Briefly the deputants (Rev. V. F.
Hartley,, Messrs. W. L. Brumley, V.
Hopkins, Sister Rees and Miss M.
Brumley, Director) proposed:
,(1) Council borrow money to erect
building on a site already granted
in the Park.
(2) Money can be supplemented by a
grant from the Department of
Health on a £2 for £1 basis.
<3> Suggested amount of loan £1,150
for a 10 or 15 year period, making
with grant, an amount of £3,450.
(4) Allocation of amount—£3,000 build
ing £300 equipment and £150 beau
tification of surroundings.
(5) Assistance of Committee, say £130
per annum for three or four years
to cover interest and sinking fund.
This removes from Council re
sponsibility for payment during the
few lean years immediately ahead.
(fj) This payment ' would cover in
terest £38 and Sinking Fund £92
per annum, reducing loan in three
years to £874.
(7) Committee suggests that if loan is
raised a clause be inserted pro
viding the right to reduce at end
of any 12 months.
[ (8) Committee has money in hand to
! guarantee payment of interest, etc.,
as suggested and would be prepared
to pay same, if necessary, into a
trust fund for this purpose.
(9) The work is extremely urgent. The
present facilities are totally in
adequate.
The deputation received a good hear
ing but council baulked at the motion
by Crs. Terry and McPhee that coun
cil immediately agree to the proposal',
Councillors wanted time to consider
the matter further and Cr. Ericksen,
while saying that he very much favor
ed Nursery Schools and was “all for
them,” pointed out that Spring Vale
and Noble Park should also be con
sidered. "Do the lot, if you are going
to do one,” he declared.
Finally, the movers agreed to give
notice of motion.
Cr. Terry then moved that council
make further enquiries regarding the
plan, costs, and availability of grants,
and that the secretary gather any
other available information for coun
cil’s guidance.
