VICTORIA
His Grace the Archbishop, who
was spending a few days with his
Lordship Bishop Higgins, moto.red

ing proportions Half-share to the
Melbourne Hospital, '.quarter-share to
the St.. Vincent's Hospital, and
quartei'-share to the Benevolent Asy
lum. This estate is valued for pro
bate purposes at £47,818, comprising
realty and personalty in Victoria of
a value of £46,618. and personalty
in Queensland of the value of £700.
From the T. J. Sumner estate the
Little Sisters of the Poor receive
£15.

His Grace the Archbishop of Mel
bourne (the Most Rev. Dr. Carr),
his Grace the Coadjutor-Archbishop
of Melbourne (the Most Rev. Dr.
Mannix), and his Lordship the Bis
hop of Sandhurst (the Most Rev. Dr.
Reville, O.S.A.) were to be present
at the celebration of the golden sac
erdotal jubilee and the silver episco
pal jubilee of the Bishop of Ballarat
(the Most Rev. Dr. Higgins) on last
Sunday.
Crowded congregations are being
attracted by the temperance ser
mons of Father P. F. Tighe, S.J.
The crusade at St. Francis' Church
recently brought a most encourag
ing gathering to that historic
church. The pledge is being given
for twelve months, .and a large num
ber responded to the appeal of the
eloquent Jesuit. The Rev. Father is
visiting the schools, and the temper
ance crusade is being warmly en
couraged by the teachers and gladly
taken up by the children.
Missions were recently opened at
St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne,
and at St. Francis' Church by the
Vincentian Fathers. The Redemptor-
ist Fathers were very successful with
their missiou at St. Mary's Church,
St. Kilda East. The church was
crowded daily. Father Hunt dealt
trenchantly with the product of ma
terialism—destruction of infant life
by unnatural fathers and mothers,
and said that the murder of the
unborn child was a worse crime
than the murder of a child a few
years old, because it deprived the
soul of a human being of baptism.
Dr. Mannix recently blessed and
opened a fine new High School at
tached to the Convent of Mercy,
Lilydale.

"Good sound teaching was noted in
the various rooms. Children are well
supplied with necessary text books
and school materials." Further on
he wrote : "It is a well-equipped and
well-managed school."
At a well-attended monthly meet
ing of the Central Council of the
League of the Ci'oss, held in the
Archbishop's vestry, with Mr W. L.
Bowditch, M.A., in the chair, Father
Tighe, S. J., explained the objects
of the Total Abstinence League of
the Sacred Heart, into which it was
proposed to merge the society. An
interesting discussion followed, and
consideration of the matter was de
ferred until the next meeting.

On the 24th of this month Father
Shanahan, of Hamilton, in the
Ballarat diocese, will celebrate the
golden jubilee of his ordination to
the priesthoods He has refused to
accept any monetary gift from his
parishioners, but he says if they
insist on the celebration of the
jubilee the completion of the spire
of the church would give him the
greatest satisfaction. Father Shana
han is revered l>y his own people,
and esteemed by all sections of the
community of Hamilton.' He is
president of the hospital and a
friend to the poor iiTespective of
creed or class. At a meeting of the
parishioners glowing tributes were
paid to the energy and priestly life
of his x'everence, who has been 28
years pastor of the district.
His Lordship the Bishop of Sand
hurst, Most Rev. Dr. Reville, O.S.A.
recently spent some time in the
north-eastern portion of his diocese.
He travelled 250 miles by horse and
buggy, and administered the Sacra
ment of Confirmation at six stations
within the parish of Wangaratta.
The Bishop of Sa'idhui-st has ap
pointed the Rev. P. Ellis successor
to the Rev. M. J. Rohan, and the
Rev. W. Heffernau to succeed the
Rev. J. Cremin.
A new Throne has been erected in
the sanctuary of the Cathedral,
Bendigo ; it is the gift of the late
Mrs Evans.
Mrs P. O'Brien, of "Ellenvale,"
Cowwarr, a well-known Catho
lic Gippsland lady, passed away
recently -at the residence of
her son-in-law, Mr R. John
son, Caulfield. She was on a
visit to Melbourne under medical at
tention when the sad event happen
ed. The family resided in Cowwarr
for nearly 40 years, and is highly
esteemed. The late Mrs O'Brien's
kindness and hospitality to priests
was unbounded. R.I.P.
The new Convent for the Sisters of
St. Joseph at Leongatha is nearing
completion.
Alderman James Joseph Brenan,
of the Melbourne City Council, who
has not enjoyed good health for
some time, passed away peacefully
at his residence Mount levers,
Royal Park, on the 16th of last
month fortified by the rites of Holy
Church. The late Alderman was of
a kindly, genial disposition, and made
hosts of friends, and was always
foremost in every movement to help
the sick, the poor, and' suffering.
He had attained his 71st year, and
was a native of Kilkenny, Ire
land. Office and' Requiem were
celebrated in the Church of the
Sacred Heai-t, Carlton. The Lady
Mayoress was present.
The mother of the .Rev. J. J. Mc
Carthy, of St. Francis' Church, Mrs
Patrick McCarthy, of Timoleague,
Co. Cork, Ireland, died on the 15th
of last month. Requiem Mass was
said at St. Francis' Church for the
repose of the deceased's soul. R.I.P.
