Early State Move
on Level Crossings
Legislation to facilitate abolition of metropolitan and
country level crossings will be submitted to the Legislative
Assembly ths week and the first metropolitan crossing dealt
with will probably be that at Clifton Hill.
These details were
given yesterday by the
Premier, Mr. Cain,
who said that it was
likely an overpass
would be constructed
to carry "through"
traffic over the rail-
way and the Hoddle
Street road traffic at
Heidelberg Road
crossing at Clifton
Hill.
Mr. Cain said he hoped
the work would commence
before the end of this finan
cial year. A traffic engi
neering survey had already
been commenced at Heidel-
berg Road crossing and lay-
out of the work there would
be largely determined by
traffic movement.
Priority would also be
given to eliminating the
crossings at Nepean High-
way, Moorabbin, and
Napier Street, Footscray.
The ultimate design of
work at Moorabbin would
depend on whether the rail
way line would have to be
lowered.
Elevation of the railway
track would be involved at
Footscray, where difficulties
would be increased by the
need to provide a temporary
railway crossing.
Other Sites
Mr. Cain said the re-
moval, by-passing or mini-
mising of traffic movements
at other crossings in the
country and city would
begin as soon as. possible.
The other two most
urgent metropolitan cross
ings to be eliminated are
at Glen Huntly Road, El-
sternwick, and Melbourne
Road, Newport.
Mr. Cain said that 10
crossings had been chosen
for the Government's ini-
tial work in the country.
Tenders for the construc-
tion of the new by-pass
roads to eliminate these
crossings on several main
arteries would be called im-
mediately Parliament had
passed the necessary legis-
lation, which would be sub-
mitted to the Legislative
Assembly this week.
Mr. Cain said the Country
Roads Board would carry
out the crossings plan in
the rural areas.
He said that —
On the Whittlesea line
five crossings would be
reduced to one by con-
struction of by-pass roads
at two crossings near
Mernda and two near
Yan Yean;
On the Hume Highway
two very dangerous cross-
ings north and south of
Glenrowan would be by-
passed;
On the Maryborough-
Ballarat main road two
bad crossings just north
of Clunes would be
avoided, and
On the Bendigo-Swan
Hill railway two cross
ings about seven miles
north of Eaglehawk
would be eliminated.
