11XED BATHHG.
"AN IMPERIAL DANGER."
KILLS ROMANCE AND HINDERS
marriage: ":
: Mixed bathing has been condemned at a
meeting of th'e TonbridgeVTo'wn •'Council
(England) by Councillor 'Son-aid Clark, "on
imperialistic and patriotic, grounds." ' ■
In an amusing discussion, Councillor
Clark declared that the sight-of a woman
in bedraggled bathing costume, with her
hair Bunched beneath a hideous cap and
s traggi'ing over- her eyesi like a wet Skye
terrier, would drive from his mind any
thought of marriage. He" had watched
mixed bathing a long timeand had come
to the conclusion that Brighton and-other
towns were responsible for the. decadence
of the nation. He implored the council
to. set a fearless example to the country
and to dilcourage mixed-bathing, for the
patriotic reason that every' encouragement
should be given to the rearing of . an im
perialistic, race through the "increase of
marriage.
The council rejected Councillor . Clark's
amendment by one vote and family bathing
is to be permitted at the baths during cer
tain hours on Sundays. ■
In an interview Councillor Claii, who is a
Scotsman and a retired army man, said,
"I' am a' Puritan, and piioud of it. T was
perhaps brought tp very strictly. .: I main
tain that nothing is'to be gained by any
sort of laxness. What I said about mixed
lathing was out. of my convictions and in
the interests of women. I am convinced
that women lose more than they gain by
mixed bathing, though I do not deny that
the subject' is a debatable one Speaking
out of my knowledge of Brighton,- however,
I- believe, that more husbands .have been
lost than won on the beach there through
mixed bathing. Mixed bathing rubs all
the romance off things."
