AFFAIRS ABROAD.
A telegram from La Quoyra stoles that
the steamer Versailles, from Saranilla
(Costa Rica), reports that Colombian
steamers have lauded 1100 men near the
mouth of the Altrato- Their mission is
to make their way across the Darien
Mountains, in order to invade the terri
tory of the new Republic of Panama.
Troops from Cauca are also marching
on Panama. Movements of troops are
reported trom the whole of Colombia.
At the meeting of the 11th of the Pro
pagandß, the Cardinals again discussed
informally the appointment of anew
Bishop of Southwark. Opinion was di
vided, half of the members supporting
Mgr. Amigo, Dr Bourne’s candidature,
and the other members supporting the
candidates recommended by "the Chapter
of the Southwark Diocese.
A terrible accident occurred not long
ago at the Gossen-Lpgas-e Colliery, at
Montegneo. near Liege (Belgium!.' The
miners had been working later than

broach of copyright. The judgment ren

copyright, and enjoins tbe photographer*
and the publishers of the book in ques
tion to cease publication of the photo
graph. ruder a penalty of 50 francs for
each infraction of this onki. On the
other hand, as Baron Beaudoin

A. maiked improvement in the condi
tion of PrinooFse Mathilde 16 reported-
When the German Bmperor underwent
an operation recently, Princesse Mathilde
was one of the persons who sent a mes
sage of sympathy. His Mnjes*y has
now returned the attention. Ye-Vrdnr,
the 9th of this month. Prince Rondolin,
Gorman Ambassador in Paris, colled on
Princess Mathilde. and on behalf of hie
sovereign, presented her with a basket of
choice flowers, and expressed wishes for
her proiipt recovery.
The ccrcle Philidos, the premier chess
club of Paris, last Saturday, successfully
inaugurated rheir new quarters, nt IS
Boulevard Strasbourg, with an exhibition
of simultaneous play. M. Znnonski, the
well-known chess exponent, played
against 13 members of the ccrc'e. winning
16 game?, the remaining two being drawn.
M. Zanr.nski. with a pleasant word for
each of his adversaries, started on his
walking tour round the 13 che-sbop.rds at
9 p.m., marie -he last- move in the
last game at midnight. Several of the
games proved highy interesting, though,

employment of children in theatres. The
