THE PORT ADELAIDE WATER
SUPPLY.
The residents of the greater part of the
city of Port Adelaide will within two
months have a much better water supply.
A 15-in. cast iron main, which is being laid
along the Port-road for a length of 3 miles
63 chains, will bring about this desirable
state of things. This main will be con-
nected with a 24-in. steel main at Leaten's
Corner close to the Underdale-road, which
comes direct from the Happy Valley water-
works. About 60 men are at work laying
the new main. Operations were started
at Woodville on April 26, and the pipes
were then laid towards Port Adelaide as
far as Peel-street, Alberton, this part being
completed on Saturday. Connections will
there be made when everything is ready
with the 10-in. main which at present runs
down the Port-road, and with a similar
main which was lately laid across Alberton
past the oval, and which will join the 10-
in. main which goes via Torrens-road.
The other portion of the work (from Wood-
ville to the Underdale-road main) is now
being proceeded with, and so far 1¾ miles
of piping are down ready for charging.
The Port Adelaide district will soon have
four mains from the reservoirs, namely,
10-in. and 15-in. mains down the Port-road,
a 12-in. main via Military-road, and a 10-
in. line along Torrens-road. The 6-in.
pipes required for the Birkenhead main,
which it is purposed to join to an 8-in. main
in Military-road, are not yet available, those
that are now being turned out at the
Glanville workyards being needed urgently
in the northern areas. They are expected
to be ready shortly, however. The main
will go via Hargrave-street to Victoria-
road, which is the extreme west of Birken-
head.
